We know that stainless steel is often used in kitchen cabinets, wardrobes, metal cooler carts and other places, whether it is living hardware or industrial supplies, it is very common. While there are thousands of different stainless steel alloys, they all fall into three broad categories:
Austenitic stainless steel. These are the most commonly used types of stainless steel. Compared to other steel alloys, austenitic stainless steels tend to have higher chromium content and therefore have higher corrosion resistance. Another common feature of austenitic stainless steel alloys is that they tend to be non-magnetic - although they may become magnetic after cold working.
Ferritic stainless steel. The second most common form of stainless steel after austenitic alloys. As the name suggests, ferritic stainless steels are magnetic. These alloys can be hardened by cold work. They also tend to be cheaper due to the reduced nickel content.
Martensitic stainless steel. The least common category of stainless steel alloys. Their corrosion resistance tends to be lower than ferritic or austenitic alloys, but they have high hardness. Martensitic stainless steel alloys are often ideal for applications requiring extremely high tensile strength and impact resistance. These alloys can be used with protective polymer coatings when corrosion resistance is also required for the application.
Duplex (ferritic-austenitic) stainless steel. This type of stainless steel is named "duplex" because of its composition; it is made of semi-austenite and semi-ferrite. Compared to standard austenitic stainless steels, these stainless steel alloys have better corrosion resistance, especially chloride pitting resistance, and higher tensile strength. Due to its physical properties and chemical resistance, duplex stainless steels are widely used in piping systems in the oil and gas industry or piping and pressure vessels in the petrochemical industry.
Precipitation hardened (PH) stainless steel. These stainless steels are composed of durable, corrosion-resistant alloys with exceptional strength. When treated, their yield strength is three to four times that of standard austenitic stainless steels. They are most commonly used in the aerospace, nuclear, and oil and gas industries.
