Thankfully there are blood pressure monitors that you can use to monitor your BP level at regular intervals. These monitors can easily be used at home and you don't need to go for a checkup every time. There are certain steps that you can follow to do that.

Steps to Follow While Checking Blood Pressure at Home

The following are the steps to follow while checking blood pressure with a BP monitor at home. To receive the right output and to preserve the monitor for future use, one must follow these 5 steps carefully.

Step 1: Choose the Appropriate Blood Pressure Monitor for Yourself

The first step that is required to follow when you are going to use a blood pressure measuring machine at home is to choose the appropriate machine. There are two types of machines available in the market. The first one is manual monitors which is quite an old technique.

The second one is automatic blood pressure monitors which automatically read your BP and you just have to wrap the belt around your arm. We have different kinds of automatic BP measuring machines available with us at MedGuard which are highly proficient and show you accurate results within seconds.

Step 2: Preparation for the Reading

Now, once you have bought the perfect blood pressure monitor for you, it is time that you prepare for the reading. You have to calm yourself down before you take the reading. Make sure you have not done any high-intensity work within the last few minutes of taking the test because it will automatically impact your BP.

You have to choose a quiet and peaceful place where you can sit back and take the reading accurately without any disturbance. You can use a chair where you can rest your body and measure your BP. Remember not to sit crossed legs while you take the reading.

Step 3: Start the Process

Now, you are all set to start the process. Turn on the BP device as instructed and wrap the belt around your cuff. If you have a manual machine, you have to inflate the belt manually by adjusting the pump. In the case of an automatic machine, this process will happen automatically. Now keep breathing normally or wait for the reading to appear. You are all done with your BP reading.

Step 4: Understand the Reading and Record

Once your BP monitor shows you the reading of your BP, you need to understand the reading first, whether you have a normal BP or it is high or low. The normal BP level is 120/80. Note your BP level and keep it safe for further use. Now, there are several terms related to BP which you should know -

  • Normal

If your BP is 120/80 or below, then you have normal BP levels.

  • Elevated

If your BP measures 120 to 129 /80, then you have elevated BP levels.

  • Hypertension Stage 1

If your BP levels have a systolic rate of - 130 to 139 or a diastolic rate of 80 to 89, then you have a chance of having Hypertension Stage 1.

  • Hypertension Stage 2

If your BP levels have a systolic rate of - 140 or higher or a diastolic rate of 90 or more than that, then you have the chance of having Hypertension Stage 2.

  • Hypertensive Crisis

If your BP levels have a systolic rate of 180 or more or a diastolic rate of 120 or more, then you have a Hypertensive Crisis.

  • Low Blood Pressure

If your blood pressure levels are below 90/60, then you have a low BP problem.

Step 5: Medical Consultation

Now once you have done with your readings and understand it, it is time to consult your doctor on an immediate basis. You can continue to keep track of your BP for a month or a week and then report it to your doctor for the best advice.

People who are suffering from severe issues such as low BP, hypertension hypertensive crisis etc. should stay in touch with the medical team on an immediate basis and take precautions.
