Detroit, the Michigan largest city started as a fur trading post for France and then developed into a center for industry becoming the fourth largest city in America. The 19th century saw the development of the city’s industry and commerce. Manufacturing firms developed due to the good transportation provided by the river and railway line. In the end of the 19th and the 20th century, many buildings were being constructed around the city. This paper covers the decline of Detroit and also explains its future.
After the WW2, the auto industry quickly developed becoming the largest in the US. The development of the motor industry attracted many people in Detroit especially those who lost employment in farms. The immigrants started businesses and established communities that greatly shaped the economy and culture of Detroit. By the end of the 20th century, the city was experiencing increased revitalization. The suburbs continued to grow though its population was declining with the number of the white reducing at a high rate. The recession in population was one of the signs of the decline of Detroit that meant a decrease in revenue to the city.
The decline of Detroit was influenced by the racial wars that took place starting in 1943. The Black and the White youth were always in conflict. Most of the times, the police were unable to control the situation. The conflict later developed into racial riots leading to the deployment of military troops by President Roosevelt. The riots continued between the largely white police force and militant black youth, therefore, there was much violence. However, in July 1967 the riots reached their pick becoming violent. The riots marked change in the residency with the Whites mostly settling in the suburbs and the industry jobs being set away from the city. The riots not only changed the residence, but also the music industry with the blacks dominating it. The 1973 election confirmed that Detroit had become a Blacks city.
The racial division influenced the economy of Detroit since the suburbs and the city would not survive without each other. The suburbs depended on the city for jobs while the city depended on the suburb for man power that provided the innovation that was needed for continued growth of the city. The division resulted in many jobless people with most of the resources underutilized
The case that was filed in court by unions and pension funds against Detroit expressed the request for cutting the pension paid to retirees. Detroit wanted to reduce pension paid in order to reduce its debt. The court accepted the reduction because the city was insolvent, but cautioned that the cut should be fair and equitable
The governor and businessmen tried to revive the city in a number of projects, though not all have been successful. Some of the rich people in Detroit like Max Fisher and Herd Ford II were involved in projects constructing. The move by Ford Motors to have its headquarters in one of the buildings led to the development of small businesses around it.
The city of Detroit with its reconstruction of business and reemergence of community has a capacity to revive to its position as a city of great importance in the world. Detroit had a joblessness problem, which could only be solved through the use of its diverse resources like the land and innovative ideas from its residents. In an effort to have a healthier business setting in the future, Detroit community and technical experts will have to create mandates to enable such an environment.
Detroit started as an industrial city developing into one of the largest cities in America with the motor industry being one of the major industries contributing to its financial power. Detroit started to decline due to conflicts that emerged between the white and black people who had migrated in search of jobs. However, there is hope for the reemergence of Detroit if there is revival of good business environment and reestablishment of communities.
