What is a shear beam load cell and how does it work?
Shear beam load cell is one of the main categories or types of load cells commonly used in the weighing industry. Other types include, for example; compression, tension, and single point. They are arguably the most common type of load cell in use today.
The shear beam load cell operates as a simple cantilever, which bends slightly when subjected to force or weight. They are usually fixed at one end and free at the other end, which behaves like a diving board, but they also have a double-ended design, with both ends installed and loaded in the center, more like a hammock. In addition, it is common to see that the shear beam load cells are divided into two sub-categories, depending on how they measure force or weight. The bending beam element measures the amount of bending deformation that occurs, while the shear beam element measures the shear deformation.
The shear beam load cell represents the largest and most versatile load cell group, covering a wide range of possible capacities, multiple mounting options, and accessories. When single-point sensors cannot be used, they are usually combined in larger weighing equipment and scales.
