Flange bearings are bearings installed in cast iron flanges. There are three basic flange bearing styles: round or square, four-bolt flange; triangular three-bolt flange; and diamond-shaped two-bolt flange. The bearings use one of four bearing types: ball bearings, plain bearings, needle bearings and roller bearings. There are also plastics, bronzes and other materials used to make actual bearings. Flange bearings are usually used to provide support for shafts perpendicular to the bearing mounting surface.

When high speed or heavy load causes shaft bending, vibration, and axial load or movement, the shaft may cause problems. This can be alleviated by using flange bearings, which should be positioned so that they can support the shaft. Depending on the length and speed of the shaft, multiple bearings may be required. Usually, the question determines which bearing type to use to correct it. When choosing a flanged bearing, other influencing factors include cost, available space, and the amount of radial force the shaft will exert on the bearing.

Flange ball bearings are usually installed at the outer end of the shaft to provide smooth, low-friction rotary motion of the shaft. In this kind of bearing, the extremely small contact surface of the ball cannot support the weight of the shaft, and the ball bearing cannot resist linear motion. Sliding bearings, also called bushes, provide a smooth surface and help control the linear movement of the shaft. This type of flange bearing usually contains oil-impregnated bronze or nylon bushings and does not require frequent oiling or oiling to maintain operation.

Flange-mounted needle roller bearings provide support against radial loads, while also providing a low profile. This type of flange can be greased or maintenance-free and can maintain operation without the need for grease on the flange. The rolling bearing flange provides radial load support and resists the linear movement of the shaft. Compared with ball bearings, the larger contact surface of long roller bearings enables roller flange bearings to withstand the maximum load of all flange types. This comes at a price. Rolling bearings are usually more expensive than other bearing types.
