For most products, the eco-friendliness assessment must take into account the entire product life cycle. From extraction of raw materials to disposal of products.

Clothes are no exception.

That's why, in this comparison, we don't just focus on whether the fabric is biodegradable or easy to recycle. Instead, we also consider factors such as the use of chemicals and pesticides, the amount of water required for raw materials, or the impact on wildlife and workers.

Natural fibers don't need much explanation, their names are self-explanatory.

They are naturally grown fibers that come from either plants (cellulose) or animals (protein).

They are not man-made.

By definition, these fibers are biodegradable and compostable. This means they should be the most sustainable solution.

Unfortunately, we will find that this is not always the case.

Silk is a protein-based fiber made from the excrement of the silkworm caterpillar (aka silkworm).

It takes as many as 2,500 silkworms to produce one pound of raw silk. That's why silkworms need to be bred to get enough silk to produce clothes. This is called sericulture or silk farming.

This is also why silk is so luxurious and expensive.
