After the invasion of Ukraine, a number of Russian government sites were extinguished

A number of Russian government websites were reported to have been offline for a while on Thursday local time, amid the country's military operations in Ukraine.

Internet interference monitor NetBlocks on its Twitter account, quoted on Friday (25/2/2022) also reported the disturbance, including on the Kremlin and Duma sites.

"Confirmed: A number of government sites in Russia including the Kremlin and State Duma were down; this incident occurred amid a spate of cyberattacks targeting neighboring Ukraine," they tweeted.

Citing IFL Science, some of the government websites that had been shut down include the official website of Russian President Vladimir Putin aka the Kremlin, the website of the Russian parliament Duma, and the website of the Ministry of Defense.

It is not known the cause or the party responsible for the cut off access to some of the Russian government websites.

Earlier last week, a number of Ukrainian government and bank websites were downed as a result of DDos (Distributed Denial-of-Service) attacks.

Some of the websites that fell included the Ministry of Defense and the Ukrainian Armed Forces, two state-owned banks, Privatbank and Oschadbank.

Quoting from Bleeping Computer, a number of bank customers received text messages claiming bank ATMs in the country were dead.

Ukrainian cyber police reported that the text message information was part of an information attack and did not correspond to reality.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, whose website was removed after the attack, said "our website may have been attacked by DDoS. It was noted that there was an increase in the number of accesses per second than usual."

"Starting from the afternoon of February 15, 2022, DDOS attacks on a number of Ukrainian information sources have intensified," added the State Service for Special Communications and Information Protection of Ukraine.

"Due to this, a number of Privatbank and Oschadbank web services were disrupted. Websites of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces were also attacked."

Furthermore, the Ukrainian Security Service (SSU) said it had countered similar attempts to link up with intelligence agencies and dismantled bot farms targeting Ukrainian citizens with various hoaxes.

The country's Computer Emergency Response Team warned of an attack on Ukrainian authorities, coordinated by the hacker group Gamaredon (linked to Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB).

Microsoft also said earlier this month that Gamaredon had coordinated a wave of spear-phishing emails targeting Ukrainian entities and organizations since October 2021.
