Cat5 / Cat5e cable
Twisted pair cable operating up to 100MHz. Cat5e cable of Cat5 and SFTP CAT5E Cable mainly consists of four pairs of conductors. However, some of these cables contain as many as 100 pairs of conductors.
With the establishment of the 1000BASE-T (Gigabit Ethernet) standard, Cat5 cable was further developed into Cat5e (Cat5 Enhanced). This development is necessary to meet all the requirements of the new Gigabit Ethernet standard, such as signal transmission through all eight conductors of the cable (instead of the previous four).
twisted pair
A cable consisting of multiple twisted pair conductors to reduce interference. In the manufacture of twisted pair cables, plastic insulated copper conductors are twisted by twisted pairs to minimize the effects of external alternating magnetic fields and static electricity. Several of these conductor pairs are gathered into one cable. Conductor pairs located within the cable have different twist counts per meter to reduce interference between conductor pairs.
For better protection against external influences of electromagnetic fields, the cable can additionally be equipped with a conductive shield (eg made of copper or aluminum foil). Therefore, cables are available in different denominations:
Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP):
Unshielded twisted pair cable
Foil Twisted Pair (FTP):
Twisted pair cable with foil shield
Shielded Twisted Pair (STP):
Shielded twisted pair cable made of copper braid
